My class blog!!

I finally got my class set up with usernames and passwords for the class blog.  Unfortunately it wasn't all finished until Friday night so i had to email the info to the kids at home.  We will have a lesson about blogging when Spring Break is over, but I had showed them the blog already, so they may be able to try it.  I had one student write a comment almost immediately.  I have been looking at other class blogs and the students seem to really express themselves well.  Hopefully, this will be exciting enough to hold their interest and inspire some good communication.  There have been only two out of 29 students who have not returned the permission slips.  If anyone is interested I can send the permission letter, it is very basic and to the point.  I am excited about giving my students something new to bring some enthusiasm into the end of the year.  Now I am trying to think of all the things we can put on the blog.......there are so many possibilities.   http://lilypage.edublogs.org

  1. Did you have your students get permission slips signed by their parents to do the blog? I was wondering, because it was suggested for me to do that and that is actually what has stopped me from really implementing a class blog.

  2. Yes, I wrote a letter about the bog and a place for signature. I will be glad to send you a copy when we get back to school. It is on my classroom computer. That was what had stopped me for quite a while. So far only two students have not returned the slips. I set it up and the kids started commenting Friday....it is very exciting to see their participation.

  3. Oh one more thing......you need to get your principal to approve the activity and the letter. That wasn't a problem but I almost forgot to do that.

  4. Lily,
I'm thrilled for you that you got this set up. I know you had emailed me about getting the student accounts established, and I'm sorry I didn't get back to you. It's been hectic with Chase in the hospital.

I took a peek at your blog and the comments from the kids!! It's amazing how they're already interacting and finding tessellations in their own environment.

I do have a question (or two) though. Did you outline any kind of expectations for them, such as minimum number of times they are supposed to respond? Also, the students who do not have signed permission slips, what will they be able to do? Do you think that the parents might let them participate if they only reply under direct supervision?

Please keep us posted on how blogging is going!

  5. I am going to put specific expectations for students' comments and after about 2 weeks I will let them start writing posts and commenting on each other's posts. I want them to get used to responding regularly and have an idea about how to write a post. I have been in contact with one of the parents who has concerns, and they will hopefully allow their child to participate. If not, I will have the student read the blog at school and comment in writing. The other student said he will be bringing in the slip next week.
